How Smart Companies Use Social Media

by social-capitalist on May 7, 2010

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is the process of utilizing our ability to communicate and express something to achieve certain goals.  Smart companies have been using social media for a variety of business functions and goals.  Social media marketing strategies can be applied across functions to reach departmental goals.

Many clients I work with will approach us with the basic idea that they just want to be on Facebook, twitter, etc.  The first question I will ask is why?  Why do you want to be on these networks? Are you trying to listen to customers, grow awareness,  increase customer satisfaction, drive traffic, sales, or other? It really gets them thinking.

The truth is that social media can do much more for brands than the average company realizes. The chart shown illustrates how some companies are leveraging social media.  Not only can social media strategy be used for these functions but it actually can work, make more money, and save on what achieving the goal that would normally cost companies much more than with just old school marketing tactics.  For example, social media can be leveraged to gather  extremely valuable information that you might otherwise could only get in a focus group.  Assuming you are a company that conducts focus groups, moving a percentage of that budget into social media endeavors can save companies a ton.  Moreover, the results prove to be much more real than a planned focus group can deliver.
